About Tucson Tannery

Making beautiful sheepskin rugs, bark-tanned leather, and hand-felted wool goods using traditional methods and natural materials.

Sarah Brooks tanned her first deer hide the natural way in 2017, and she’s been tanning hides ever since. She has made leather from deer, elk, javelina, sheep, cow, goat, and rabbit using the ancestral methods of bark tanning and smoke tanning (also known as brain tanning). In 2020 she picked up the ancient art of wool felting and continues to learn from masters of wool craft as a member of the Tucson Handweavers and Spinners Guild.

Sarah is grateful to have studied with skilled tanning and leatherworking mentors such as Matt Richards of Traditional Tanners, Woniya Thibeault of Buckskin Revolution, Digger Crist, Maya Beth, Natalie Bartlett of Folkways School, Coleen Butler of Close to the Skin, and Peter Ananin of Woodland Tannery. Sarah has also had the privilege of studying the art of wool felting with talented maker Sasha Rabin of Earthen Shelter and master felter Susan Thompson of Spirited Hands Studio in Tucson.
